Whether it is your preferred style of game play or whether it is just a break from the repetitive grind of DP's, quests or farming; some players will enjoy buying low and selling high to make a small fortune.
This page will describe the common activities but not the illegitimate activities.
[edit] Strategies
There's nothing new about buying low and selling high as a means to make a fortune. The first key is knowing where and how to find a bargain. The second is choosing a market to sell your items for a profit. Since shops are easily set up anywhere on the map (well with the possible exception of Trainee Island) you only need to use a little imagination to find the right market place.
You do need to be aware that, outside certain village areas, you and your shop are a sitting duck for any player on a PK spree. So choose your location wisely and avoid attracting unwanted attention by setting reasonable prices that don't cause offense. If you are selling Counterpoison Scroll at Gray Bridge for 1,000R each and go AFK then don't be surprised if you return to find:
- a Whisper message calling you a "noob" and
- your dead carcass spread-eagle on the ground!
If you prefer you can always sell your wares at the Auction House.
[edit] Bargain hunting
Not a lot to say here. Compare prices, know your market and have rupee on hand to snap up a bargain when you see one. If you haven't read the story of the red paper clip then have a read and be inspired!
Places to look for bargains:
- Shops
- Auction house
- Hidden Village
- Cash Shop
[edit] Farm quest rewards for rupee
Some of the best bargains available in game are the various rewards from completing quests.
- TIP
- Save your upgraded gear in the warehouse for your next character(s) to reuse. By the time your next character completes all of the quests necessary to achieve first job transfer it will have accumulated 75,000R. You could then leave TI or stay to complete the remaining quests to accumulate another 75,000R. That's 150,000R total and does not count any profit from selling unwanted drops!
On average a new trainee leaves trainee's island (TI) with about 25,000R if you have not squandered your rupee on unnecessary items or upgrades.
After TI, the various mainland quests will earn you significant additional rupee. The various items you acquire in the process may be sold at the AH or just sold to an NPC shop for half price.
When you stock your warehouse with appropriately leveled armor and weapons that each new character can pick up and use immediately, any rupee gained from quests or drops or the sale of unwanted items will flow directly to your bottom-line profit.
Creating a series of new characters and then milking each character for rupee before deleting and repeating the process is a certain way of accumulating a few hundred thousand rupee in a relatively short space of time. The repetitive nature is not too different than grinding in the field. TI is a good place to farm for special event drops and it is also reported to be good for certain skill cards.
Depending on how far you advance each character and which jobs you choose for them you may even earn yourself Achievement Points that can be traded at Gala-Net's Achievement Shop for special items. Some special items are not able to be traded so choose carefully.
[edit] Monopoly style trading
This is a natural extension of bargain hunting whereby you purchase all of one particular in-demand item that is available in relatively short supply on the market and then attempt to sell your inventory at a premium price.
A few tips if you plan to try this:
- You will need some start up rupees. 500,000R should be adequate.
- Next you need to find a relatively low cost, low supply, yet high demand item that you can buy up as fast as possible.
- Don't try to buy up an item that there is a large supply of in the market already.
- Use the buy now price instead of placing bids. Even though you are paying a higher price, the sooner you take as many as possible of the chosen item off the market, the sooner you can establish a monopoly on that item.
- Therefore avoid items that are mostly registered for bid only.
- Once you have the monopoly on, say, "widgets" you can set the price for "widgets" and other players have no choice but to pay the price you set, if they want it now.
- At least that is the way it is for some period of time until more of that item becomes available from drops, cash shop, Hidden Village shops, other player's inventory, etc.
- Register your items for long term auctions and include an inflated buy now price.
- Many people will not wait to get the item they want and so will pay the buy now price instead of waiting 24 hours to see if their bid is successful.
Suggested items you might try this with:
- soul stones - Choose the high demand type. +Wis stones are not in as high demand as +Vit or +Str stones.
- leveled pets
- leveled armor & weapons - it's surprising how few players bother to look up the cost of blacksmith upgrades
- less common accessories - e.g. avoid rings that are earned as the reward for a quest.
- skill cards
As you make a profit you turn that profit back into your start up capital which then allows you to buy up a monopoly on increasingly higher priced items with each iteration.
- For example
- Start on potent shards (i.e. +Str soul stones) and lets say you buy 10 of them for an average of 3,000R each. This includes the ones you had to make bids on as well as the ones you were able to buy outright.
- Wait until you have 99% of the potent shards available in the AH in your inventory before you turn around and sell them at a higher price. Lets say 5,000R bid and 20,000R buy out and then set the auction for long term.
- Its that simple. Just be sure to make good choices on what you decide to buy up.
Of course buy things that people want and not what is cheap for you because no matter how cheap you get it, if no one else will buy it, you are not going to make a profit. A good rule of thumb is if you need or want the item then more than likely other players are going to need or want it too.
You should also be careful not to get into a bidding war with someone over an item. The item may be very valuable but if the price gets jacked up too high because you are fighting someone for it then its not worth it. Just think of it like the stock market, buy low, sell high.
One more thing, do not give in and sell things at a lower price just because no one is buying it at that time. If this happens then just hold on to the item for a while and then check to see if there are any available later, if there aren't many then go ahead and try to sell them again later.

Creature Taming, Pet Leveling, PK Retribution, Auction bidding and informal bounty hunting are just a handful of possible services you might charge gold for in-game.
[edit] Exchange lak for rupee
Now this you were told about on Trainee Island but it bears repeating here. The Lak Trader in each village will gladly give you rupee for your lak. You'll also be told that you could earn more rupee if you exchange lak for chips and then sell those chips. The only question is do you have the time to do so?
[edit] Sell supplies in the field
Prompted by the idea of selling Luna, Force or Soul chips in the field you might also consider selling other high demand consumables. Dungeon lobbies, bridges, etc. all are reasonable places to set up shop.
Some consumables are more easily stocked in a shop than others. Bundles of arrows are an example of a consumable item that is a nuisance to sell because you can only sell one bundle at a time. An easy workaround is to unravel the bundle and sell them individually.
[edit] Event Items
The best, yet challenging and long, way is waiting for an event that makes monsters have a chance to drop event items. If these items can be traded for something valuable, the event items will cost millions of rupees. If you find enough, you could make tens or hundreds of millions of rupees. (Maybe even billions!)

There are enough legitimate ways of making rupee in game that you really don't need to stoop to illegitimate tactics (e.g. begging or scamming) to make a small fortune. Whether your motivation is to upgrade equipment or to simply fill your warehouse with gold, the only thing limiting your ability to make rupee is your time spent in game or your real currency spent at the cash shop.
